Contesting Information

1st Level Appeal


California Vehicle Code Section 40215 allows you to contest a parking citation,
provided the citation was issued in error. To contest, follow the instructions below:
  1. To submit an appeal, click here.


  1. To submit a written appeal within 21 days of the issue date of your citation, you must:
  • Print an PDF or JPEG appeal form and mail.
  • E-mail a request to receive an appeal form by mail or fax.
  • Complete the appeal form at the UCSD Parking Office Citation Appeals Desk.
  • Include:
    1. Your full name.
    2. Your Complete mailing address (you'll receive no results without a complete mailing address including suite number, apartment number, zip code, etc.).
    3. The reason(s) why you think the citation was issued in error.
    4. Copies of documents to support your case (documents will not be returned).
       
  • Mail completed form(s) to: UCSD Citation Appeals Office 9500 Gilman Dr. 0042 La Jolla, CA 92093-0042
Note: There is no fee for a 1st level appeal. Pay the citation penalty only if you're found liable. If you're found not liable, any amount paid will be refunded.

2nd Level - Hearing

If you're dissatisfied with the results of your initial appeal, you may schedule a 2nd level
hearing by following these instructions:
  1. You must first pay the sum of the fine within 21 calendar days of the mailing of your appeal results using one of the following payment methods.
  • Mail a check or money order made payable to UC Regents:

  1. Phone UCSD Citation Appeals to schedule a hearing -- indicate your preference for a hearing
    in person or in writing: (858) 534-4356

3rd Level Civil Appeal

California Vehicle Code Section 40230(a) allows a civil appeal for a parking citation if you are dissatisfied with the results of your 2nd level
hearing. If you've received the results of your 2nd level hearing and have been found liable, you may request a Civil Appeal by following the instructions below:
  1. File your Civil Appeal at the Central Court in the jurisdiction in which the citation
    was issued. The Civil Appeal must be filed within 30 calendar days of the mailing of
    your 2nd level hearing results.
  2. Pay a filing fee to the court when filing for your Civil Appeal.

    Note: If you're found not liable during the Civil Appeal process, you'll receive a refund
    of any amount paid (including the filing fee).
